The kids and I visited my dad in Washington State last month. He runs a motorcycle campground called Cycle Camp. They have awesome stuff for the kids to play with such as a shaded dirt/sand pile, a swing set, and lots of room to roam. Caleb was in his glory and spent 90% of every day outside running amok. It was awesome. He spent a lot of time in that sand pit, it was his favorite thing. Look at this happy kid! When we came home Caleb was not impressed. No room to roam, no dirt pile, no doggies. I felt bad for him. Then I saw someone post a link about making a sandbox in a tent. Brilliant! I took advantage of the fact that it was the end of camping season and bought a great tent on Amazon for $36 and free shipping. It arrived really quickly and I immediately set it up. Wow, that is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. A bigger sandbox is better, right? Right! My car has been in the shop, so we were unable to get sand. Finally, one of our friends took pity on Caleb and picked us up a bunch of sand so we could complete the project. After weeks of waiting, Caleb was ready. So exciting! First, I put down another tarp. I had one left over from the baby's birth, so I figured an extra layer of flooring would be a good thing. Caleb was "helping". 60-lb bags of sand are no joke. I dragged a few in. This will be so cool! Whew! That was a lot of work. But it's finally done. What will Caleb think? He LOVED it!! He played hard for 30 minutes straight.

Ok, now that you’re a few years removed, did the tent hold up? I’m concerned about the bottom of the tent getting ripped up by digging??

I put down a tarp inside the tent to strengthen the bottom. The bottom held up fine. Last winter the tent had enough. Over the winter a critter shredded one side of it. But honestly the tent was starting to degrade anyways. So it lasted quite a few years for sure. Totally worth it. The sand has been moved into my planter box that I converted into a sand box.

The bottom held up fine. The sides of the tent got attacked by a critter one night though! The whole side of the tent was ripped to shreds. It did last about 2.5 years though without being taken down before the critter got to it. The sand got moved to a sand box I built in our old planter box once spring hit.
